Dal Lake partially freezes as Kashmir reels under deep freeze during Chilla-i-Kalan

Parts of the iconic Dal Lake and several other water bodies across Kashmir froze on Wednesday as sub-zero temperatures tightened their grip on the Valley during the peak winter period of Chilla-i-Kalan.

Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night, slipping further from the previous night. Shopian in south Kashmir emerged as the coldest place, with the mercury plunging to minus 7.5 degrees Celsius, reports said.

The severe cold led to freezing of interiors of Dal Lake and other water bodies, reflecting the intensity of the ongoing cold wave across the region.

Tourist destinations also witnessed biting cold conditions. Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg saw temperatures drop to minus 3.8 degrees Celsius and Sonamarg to minus 2.2 degrees Celsius.

Other parts of the Valley, including Qazigund, Kupwara and Kokernag, also experienced freezing nights. Weather officials said a western disturbance is likely to affect Kashmir’s weather from January 16, potentially bringing changes in conditions.
