Dalai Lama undergoes successful left knee replacement surgery in New Delhi

The Dalai Lama underwent a successful left knee replacement surgery at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi on Monday, according to a medical bulletin issued by his doctors. The bulletin stated that the procedure was completed successfully earlier in the day and that the Tibetan spiritual leader returned to his hospital room in stable condition following the operation.

The update was jointly issued by the Dalai Lama's personal physicians, Dr Tsetan D Sadutshang, Dr Tamdin Tsewang, Dr Tsering Lhadon and Dr Tenzin Tsundue, along with his secretary, Tenzin N Taklha. According to the statement, the Dalai Lama was recovering well after the surgery and remained in good spirits.

The medical bulletin stated that the hospital's medical, nursing and administrative teams had been providing continuous care and support throughout the treatment process and during the post-operative recovery period. The statement noted that the teams remained actively involved in monitoring and assisting the spiritual leader following the procedure.

The latest operation comes nearly two years after the Dalai Lama underwent a right knee replacement surgery in June 2024 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. According to the bulletin, he had made an excellent recovery after that procedure and subsequently resumed his activities.

The statement also expressed appreciation for the care provided by the medical teams at Apollo Hospital during the surgery and recovery process. The health update was issued as followers and well-wishers across the world continued to monitor developments regarding the Dalai Lama's condition after the operation.
