Darjeeling's famous mandarin orange earns GI tag

Darjeeling's famous mandarin orange, known for its superior taste officially earns the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the GI Registry, becoming West Bengal's 11th agricultural star. This isn't just paperwork; it's a lifeline tossed to about 4,000 struggling farmers in both Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, where orange groves have withered over the past decade due to sneaky pests, soil woes, wild weather swings, and the pandemic's punch. The push for this tag kicked off in August 2022 due to the tireless work by Professor Tulsi Sharan Ghimire from Uttar Banga Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, backed by the Darjeeling Organic Farm Producers Organisation and state science bodies.

The GI stamp is like a golden ticket for these farmers, letting only authorized growers slap the label on their produce and demand fair prices that actually cover the sweat and soil. No more getting squeezed by middlemen or lost in the shuffle of generic oranges – this tag screams "Darjeeling original," opening doors to bigger markets at home and abroad. It's a big deal because production has tanked hard lately, leaving families who once thrived on winter harvests counting losses instead of coins. But with this recognition, everyone see a revival brewing: better tech tricks to fight diseases, expert advice on the go, and government cash to plant fresh saplings and rebuild orchards.

The central government's 'Mission Suntala' is already in the mix, dishing out seedlings and prevention plans to turn the tide. For the folks in these misty valleys, where oranges aren't just fruit but a way of life, this GI win feels like sunlight after endless rain. Chairman Manoj Subba of the farmers' group is rallying everyone to learn smarter growing ways, while Professor Ghimire dreams of bumper yields and exports that put Darjeeling on global plates. It's more than money – it's pride in a tangy tradition that draws crowds to hill markets every winter. This could spark a juicy boom, reminding us how a simple tag can sow seeds of hope in forgotten fields.
