Darjeeling Toy Train generates ₹39.56 million in May, highest in five years

The Darjeeling Toy Train is witnessing record demand as large numbers of tourists head to the hills to escape the continuing heat in the plains. According to officials of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), ticket sales in May 2026 surpassed all figures recorded during the previous five years. Demand has risen to the extent that 20 to 25 tourists are being placed on waiting lists every day, while authorities expect revenue in June to exceed ₹37 million.

To cater to the growing demand, DHR is currently operating 13 toy trains daily in the hills, including nine diesel-powered services and four heritage steam-engine trains. Railway authorities have also introduced additional services, including night joy rides, and are planning special operations on holidays and peak tourist days. Officials stated that every train has been running at full capacity during the current tourist season.

The popular joy ride begins at Darjeeling Railway Station, travels through the Batasia Loop, reaches Ghum Railway Station, and returns along the same route. The journey covers approximately 14 kilometres and takes around two hours to complete. The heritage railway continues to attract visitors of all age groups seeking to experience the UNESCO-recognized mountain railway.

According to DHR data, revenue from toy train operations in May 2026 reached ₹39.560 million, the highest figure recorded in the past five years. Revenue figures stood at ₹31.964 million in 2022, ₹35.818 million in 2023, ₹28.858 million in 2024, and ₹35.860 million in 2025. Officials believe June could set another benchmark if revenue crosses the projected ₹37 million mark.

DHR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said demand for tickets has remained exceptionally strong and is expected to continue throughout June. DHR Director Rishav Choudhury stated that every service is operating at full occupancy and advised tourists to book tickets well in advance, as many visitors have been unable to secure seats after arriving in Darjeeling.
