Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
The Enforcement Directorate’s investigation into an alleged sand smuggling and financial irregularities network has intensified after Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Singh Biswas once again failed to appear before the agency. He was summoned for questioning on Wednesday at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake but did not attend, instead sending his lawyer to request additional time citing official commitments.
This is not the first time the senior police officer has skipped ED summons, making his repeated absence a growing concern for investigators. His name had first come under scrutiny following ED raids at his residence on Fern Road, after which he has largely remained out of public view. The absence has further deepened suspicion around his alleged role in the case.
The probe is linked to alleged large-scale sand smuggling operations and related financial irregularities. According to sources, investigators are examining suspected black money transactions generated through illegal mining and distribution networks. The ED is attempting to establish how the proceeds were moved and whether any administrative protection was extended to the alleged syndicate.
The investigation has also expanded to include family members, with Shantanu Singh Biswas’s son and another relative previously summoned but reportedly not appearing before the agency. Officials are now focusing on tracing the complete money trail and identifying links between administrative officials and alleged illegal networks. If the officer continues to avoid questioning, the ED may consider further legal action as the probe deepens.
