The death toll in Vietnam has risen to nearly 200 as flash floods and landslides continue to cause destruction following Typhoon Yagi, state media reported on Thursday. With 197 people confirmed dead and 128 still missing, rescue efforts are ongoing in the worst-affected regions.
In Lao Cai province, a flash flood on Tuesday swept away the entire hamlet of Lang Nu, leaving 53 villagers unaccounted for. So far, 42 bodies have been recovered. Most fatalities occurred in the northwestern provinces, where heavy rains and high river levels persist after the typhoon.
Typhoon Yagi, which struck Vietnam on Saturday, is the strongest storm the country has seen in decades, with wind speeds reaching 149 kph. The industrial sector in northern Vietnam has also been hit hard, with significant damage to factories in export areas.
