High Court issues contempt notices to Mamata and Abhishek over 'Shaheed Diwas' rally
With the voter list revision process nearing completion, the Election Commission of India is set to take a final call on nearly 60 lakh names that were kept under review following the Special Intensive Revision exercise. According to the Commission, decisions have already been made on around 58 lakh names, with the remaining cases expected to be resolved today. A supplementary voter list was released on Sunday night, and another is scheduled for publication on Monday.
Despite this progress, significant uncertainty remains over the exact number of names that have been deleted from the electoral rolls. Allegations have emerged that the supplementary list still contains names of eligible voters, raising concerns about the accuracy of the revision process. The situation has added to apprehensions among voters, especially those awaiting clarity on their inclusion ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
Compounding the issue is the incomplete functioning of tribunals tasked with handling objections and appeals. In several areas, tribunals are yet to become fully operational, leading to concerns about infrastructure and accessibility. This raises questions about whether affected individuals will have a fair opportunity to challenge exclusions before the voter list is finalised.
As per directions of the Supreme Court of India, judicial officers are currently resolving pending cases, with the process now in its final phase. The Commission has indicated that the voter list will be frozen today ahead of the first phase of polling on April 23, and no further additions will be allowed thereafter. The final list will be handed over to candidates on April 9, while a similar timeline applies for the second phase of polling on April 29. However, concerns persist that tribunals may take more time to become fully functional, potentially impacting electoral participation.
