A Delhi court on Friday granted bail to alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar in a bribery case involving the AIADMK’s "two leaves" election symbol. Special Judge Vishal Gogne granted bail on a personal bond of ₹5 lakh, noting that Chandrasekhar had already been detained for longer than the maximum jail term specified for the offense.
Chandrasekhar was accused of acting as a middleman for AIADMK leader T T V Dinakaran and attempting to bribe an Election Commission official to secure the party’s symbol for the faction led by V K Sasikala. The prosecution claimed that ₹1.3 crore in cash, allegedly intended for bribing the official, was recovered from Chandrasekhar.
However, Chandrasekhar will remain in jail due to other pending cases against him. The judge stated that Chandrasekhar's detention beyond seven years "entails his mandatory release," noting that his continued detention was not legally justified.
