A horrifying incident unfolded at Inderlok Metro Station on the Red Line in Delhi as a 35-year-old woman, identified as Reena, lost her life after being dragged along the platform for 25 meters. The tragic incident occurred when the woman's sari got entangled in the door of a moving Delhi Metro train.
Reena, a vegetable vendor and mother of two, was attempting to board a train's general compartment with her 11-year-old son on Thursday, heading to a wedding. Despite efforts by bystanders to flag down the operator, the train continued its journey, and Reena collided with the platform track access gate before falling onto the tracks.
Reena sustained severe head and back injuries, leading to her demise two days later at Safdarjung Hospital. The Metro trains are equipped with sensors designed to automatically open doors in case of obstruction, but a senior Delhi Metro official stated that the sensors functioned appropriately in this case.
The incident has prompted an inquiry by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety, and both Delhi Police and CISF officials are conducting investigations to determine if negligence played a role. The tragic incident has raised questions about platform safety measures, with some stations lacking barriers that might have prevented such accidents.
