An incident in Domkal of Murshidabad district has sparked outrage after a woman allegedly died following repeated torture linked to a land dispute with her husband and in-laws. The deceased has been identified as Parvina Khatun, a resident of Faridpur in Jalangir. Police recovered the body and sent it for autopsy as the incident triggered strong reactions in the area.
According to family members, Parvina had married Habi Mandal of Domkal a few years ago as his third wife. As a condition of the marriage, Habi reportedly transferred two kathas of land in Parvina’s name. However, soon after the marriage, the husband and in-laws allegedly began pressuring her to return the land. When she refused, she was reportedly subjected to repeated harassment and physical abuse. The situation reportedly escalated on Sunday when an altercation broke out over the land issue. Family members allege that Parvina was severely beaten during the dispute, leading to her death. Her relative Rozina Bibi claimed that the demand for the land had continued since the marriage and that Parvina faced constant torture after refusing to hand it back. Another relative, Bapi Mandal, said the family had recently been informed about the harassment and was planning to intervene before the tragedy occurred.
The accused husband, however, claimed that Parvina died after his mentally unstable son Yamin Mandal suddenly attacked her with a wooden stick. Local panchayat representative Sourav Hossain said the youth had previously shown aggressive behaviour and had assaulted family members earlier. Villagers reportedly detained the accused after the incident and handed him over to the police. Authorities have arrested the accused and begun an investigation, while the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
