A massive chain of accidents caused by dense fog resulted in the death of four people, including two police officers, and left 15 to 20 others seriously injured on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway on Monday morning. The catastrophic accident involved nearly 20 to 25 vehicles, occurring just a day after similar pile-ups were reported in Haryana due to poor visibility.
Extremely low visibility, caused by the dense fog, was the primary trigger for the disaster. The initial collision involved two dumper lorries, which were then struck by a third lorry transporting guavas. The situation rapidly deteriorated when the fruit-laden lorry overturned, scattering its cargo across the expressway. This resulted in a slippery road surface, which, combined with the foggy conditions, made it virtually impossible for oncoming drivers to brake effectively, leading to the massive multi-vehicle pile-up.
Rescue teams, including police and ambulances, immediately rushed to the scene to manage the disaster. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition, while the bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem. Traffic movement on the affected stretch was severely disrupted until the road could be cleared. Authorities have issued strong advisories urging motorists to exercise extreme caution in foggy conditions by maintaining safe speeds and distances between vehicles.
