Diplomatic dilemma: India's appeal for navy personnel faces crucial test in Qatar

India is anticipating a "positive outcome" in the appeal filed by the families of eight former Indian Navy personnel who were sentenced to death by a Qatari court on October 26. The men, including decorated officers who commanded frontline warships, have been detained for over a year on undisclosed charges, with reports suggesting accusations of espionage.

While both countries have not publicly disclosed the charges, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, stated during a media briefing that the case is sensitive, currently in legal proceedings, and an appeal has been filed in Qatar’s Court of Appeal.

Bagchi emphasized the ongoing appeal process, expressing hope for a positive resolution and noting that India is engaged with Qatari authorities on the matter, providing legal and consular assistance. He urged against speculation due to the case's sensitive nature and the confidential nature of the judgment made by the Qatari side.

The families of the eight men have already filed a mercy petition, exploring potential avenues such as an agreement signed in 2015 between India and Qatar for the transfer of convicted prisoners. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar assured the families of government efforts to secure their release during a meeting on October 30.
