Donald Trump picks JD Vance as vice president nominee

Former US President Donald Trump has selected JD Vance, a Republican senator from Ohio, as his vice presidential nominee on Monday (local time). Vance, 39, was once a fierce critic of Trump but has since become one of the former president's staunchest defenders.

The announcement came at the start of the four-day Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to nominate the party's presidential ticket. "After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator JD Vance of the Great State of Ohio," Trump said.

The former president praised Vance's achievements, citing his resume, including his service in the Marine Corps, his degree from Yale Law School, and his bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy".

JD Vance's selection could increase the odds of Trump supporters turning out for the November 5 presidential election as the 39-year-old, an Ohio native, is popular with the Republican candidate's base.
