Acting on the orders of the Supreme Judicial Magistrate Court, the police on Friday arrested eight members of a family for allegedly torturing a 22-year-old woman for dowry, raping her and then throwing her out of the house.
The victim said that she got married in Pilibhit town on May 12, 2022, and her father spent more than Rs 35 million on the wedding, but her husband and in-laws were not satisfied and demanded another Rs 20 million.
She claimed that she was physically and mentally tortured.
Sungarhi police station SHO Rajiv Sharma said, "The victim's husband, his elder brother, parents and four other family members have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC and sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act."
