Justice (retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai announced on Friday that the draft of the proposed Uniform Civil Code for Uttarakhand is now complete and will soon be submitted to the state government.
Desai, who leads the committee of experts established by the Uttarakhand government last year, stated that the panel has taken into account various opinions and thoroughly examined existing statutes and uncodified laws, including the legal frameworks of select countries.
During a press conference, Justice Desai expressed her delight in informing the public that the drafting process for the proposed uniform civil code for Uttarakhand has been successfully concluded. She further mentioned that the committee's report, along with the draft code, will be printed and presented to the Uttarakhand government in the near future.
The introduction of a Uniform Civil Code aims to establish a comprehensive set of laws that would apply to all citizens, irrespective of their religious beliefs or personal customs.
The code seeks to provide a unified legal framework for matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, among others.
