Another KMC councillor, Biswajit Mondal arrested, after woman alleges molestation and threats
A chilling incident unfolded in Asansol when a young man allegedly shot his mother, set their house on fire and later died by suicide. The incident took place at Ramakrishna Sarani on College Road under Kulti police station limits, sending shockwaves through the neighbourhood.
The accused, identified as Raja Mukherjee, had been battling addiction and frequently demanded money from his parents. Police sources said he had also been pressuring his father to sell the family house, a demand that had caused prolonged domestic tension and repeated disputes. Raja allegedly assaulted his father Dayamoy Mukherjee, forcing him to flee to his daughter’s home in Kashipur, Purulia, to save his life. The situation escalated again on Thursday when Raja reportedly shot his mother inside the house and then set the property on fire.
Neighbours noticed smoke and raised an alarm, prompting police and fire services to rush to the spot. After the blaze was doused, both Raja and his mother were found critically injured and taken to hospital, where they were declared dead. Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examination and initiated a detailed investigation into the incident.
