A major drug haul has been reported from Malda, where police seized brown sugar worth around ₹2.5 crore in two separate operations. Three suspected drug smugglers have been arrested in connection with the case.
According to officials, Sameed Sheikh (20) and Sameema Akhtar (30), both residents of Kaliachak, were intercepted on National Highway 12 in Natibpur area of Jalalpur. A search of their possession led to the recovery of 1 kg 539 grams of brown sugar.
In a separate operation, Mohammad Rafikul Islam, also from Kaliachak, was arrested by Golapganj Outpost Police in Sujapur area. Authorities are now probing the source of the narcotics and the intended smuggling route.
Police said the investigation will focus on identifying the wider network behind the contraband supply, as Malda remains a known transit point in West Bengal’s narcotics trade.
