A Ganesh idol immersion procession in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district turned into tragedy late Tuesday night after a drunk driver rammed his SUV into a crowd of devotees. The incident occurred in Jurudand village under Bagicha police station limits when more than 100 people had gathered for the immersion ceremony.
The speeding SUV ploughed into the procession on Bagicha–Jashpur road, killing three people on the spot. The victims were identified as Vipin Prajapati (17), Arvind Kerketta (19), and Khirovati Yadav (32). At least 22 others sustained injuries, some of them critically.
While the seriously injured were rushed to Ambikapur Medical College in Surguja district, others were admitted to a local community health centre. Police confirmed that the SUV driver, Sukhsagar Vaishnav (40), was intoxicated at the time of the incident. He has been arrested and the vehicle seized.
Authorities have registered a case and further investigation is underway. The incident has triggered widespread anger in the area, with locals demanding stricter checks to prevent drunk driving during religious gatherings.
