Tension gripped the Hooghly Branch School area on Monday after a drunk driver drove his car straight up to the school gate, triggering panic among teachers and parents. The incident took place near Hooghly Chowk market, where the government-run school is located. Eyewitnesses said the white four-wheeler entered the school compound suddenly, forcing bystanders to move aside to avoid injury.
Fortunately, the school gate was relatively empty at the time of the incident, as classes were ongoing. Teachers and parents later said that during school hours or dispersal time, the area is usually crowded with students and guardians, and a major tragedy was narrowly avoided.
The driver, reportedly heavily intoxicated, was detained by locals before police from Chunchura police station arrived. A liquor bottle was recovered from the car, and the driver, who was barely able to speak, was taken into custody. The vehicle has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
