A man has been arrested in Patna for driving his car into the motorcade of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, despite being under the influence of alcohol, in Bihar where the sale and consumption of liquor have been banned since April 2016. The incident occurred late on Wednesday when Yadav, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, was passing through J P Ganga Path.
According to Sultanganj police station SHO Manoj Kumar, the vehicle unexpectedly entered the convoy, prompting immediate action from patrolling personnel. Upon investigation, the driver was found to be intoxicated. The accused, a resident of Mokama in Patna district, has been taken into custody and booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the state's prohibition laws. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of enforcing the alcohol ban in Bihar.
The prohibition policy, implemented by the Nitish Kumar government, aims to curb social issues related to alcohol consumption. Despite the ban, incidents of illicit liquor trade and consumption continue to surface. This latest event, involving a high-profile political leader's convoy, underscores the persistent issue of alcohol-related offenses in the "dry" state.
