The Andal police in Durgapur arrested two men on Monday evening for the alleged gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl, within 24 hours of the incident. The accused, identified as Suraj Bauri and Vishal Dom, were produced before the Durgapur Sub-Divisional Court on Tuesday morning. After the hearing, the presiding judge remanded both individuals to six days of police custody to facilitate further investigation.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening when the two accused, who are residents of the Andal police station area, took the local minor to an isolated location and allegedly gang-raped her. The victim managed to escape from the custody of the accused and returned to her home. She subsequently disclosed the entire ordeal to her family members, after which the news of the assault spread throughout the locality on Monday.
Following the disclosure, the family members of the victim approached the Andal police station on Monday and lodged a formal complaint against the two accused. The police acted swiftly upon receiving the complaint and launched an operation, which led to the apprehension of both Suraj Bauri and Vishal Dom by Monday evening. The rapid police action was initiated to maintain law and order as tension had spread across the local area.
According to police sources, the victim was previously acquainted with the two accused and had accompanied them on Sunday evening out of trust. The victim's family stated that the accused exploited this trust to lure her to the secluded spot where the assault took place. The arrested individuals will remain in police custody for six days as per the judicial order.
