A fire broke out around 3:30 AM on Tuesday on the ground floor of a house in Rabindra Pally, Kestopur, under the jurisdiction of Baguiati police station. Local residents noticed smoke and alerted emergency services. One fire engine arrived at the location soon after.
The fire caused the death of Sabyasachi Chakraborty, a resident of the building, aged around 40. He suffered severe burn injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The intensity of the fire prevented his rescue before it was brought under control.
Local residents assisted firefighters in containing the blaze. Although the fire was partially doused, Sabyasachi could not be saved. The structure sustained damage, but no other injuries were reported during the incident.
Officials from the fire department and Baguiati police have started an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Forensic teams may be deployed for further examination if needed. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
