EC issue show cause notice to BJP's Abhijit Gangopadhyay over remarks against CM

The Election Commission (EC) on Friday issued a show-cause notice to former high court judge and BJP Lok Sabha candidate Abhijit Gangopadhyay for making "improper, injudicious, and undignified" remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The action follows a complaint by the Trinamool Congress.

Gangopadhyay made the controversial comments during a public meeting on May 15 in Haldia. He allegedly questioned Banerjee's "price" and made derogatory comments about her gender and appearance. "Trinamool says (BJP's Sandeshkhali candidate) Rekha Patra was bought for Rs 2,000. So, Mamata Banerjee, what is your price, Rs 10 lakh?" he reportedly said. He also insinuated that Banerjee's appearance was due to using Keya Seth makeup products.

The EC's notice described Gangopadhyay's remarks as "improper, injudicious, beyond dignity in every sense of the term, in bad taste" and stated that they appeared to violate the Model Code of Conduct and advisory guidelines to political parties.

The EC has demanded a response from Gangopadhyay by 5 PM on May 20.
