EC officials to stay on 24-hour duty at strong rooms in Bengal amid protests and “tampering” allegations

Security arrangements at strong rooms across West Bengal have been significantly tightened following rising political tension and allegations of irregularities during the post-poll phase. Election Commission officials will now remain present outside strong rooms on a 24-hour basis, while a designated officer appointed by the Returning Officer or Assistant Returning Officer will also be on continuous duty to monitor activities and ensure strict compliance with protocols.

The Election Commission has further strengthened the security framework by enhancing deployment of Central Armed Police Forces under a three-layer security system. Entry into strong rooms will now be permitted only with proper authorization from designated officials. In addition, provisions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been imposed around strong room areas, restricting gatherings within a defined perimeter to maintain order and security during the sensitive counting period.

The move comes amid heightened political activity and protests outside multiple counting centres in Kolkata, where Trinamool Congress leaders have alleged suspicious activity inside strong rooms housing EVMs. Sit-in demonstrations were reported outside key centres, with rival political representatives also present at some locations, further intensifying the situation on the ground.

In one instance at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra, Trinamool leaders raised concerns over alleged unusual movement inside the strong room, while in another location at Sakhawat Memorial School, senior political figures were present as tensions escalated outside the counting centre. Allegations of improper handling of ballots and lack of transparency have been consistently raised by party representatives.

Officials, however, have maintained that all procedures are being followed as per established guidelines, including proper communication with political parties regarding postal ballots and security arrangements. The Chief Electoral Officer has reiterated that the system is being managed under strict rules, while ongoing deployments and monitoring measures aim to ensure security, transparency, and controlled access at all strong room locations.
