In a major step to ensure free, fair, and violence-free Assembly elections in West Bengal, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer has imposed strict restrictions on motorcycle movement and rallies starting two days before polling. The directive, issued to all District Election Officers and police authorities, aims to prevent intimidation, disruption, and unlawful mobilization during the crucial election period.
According to the order, no motorcycle rallies will be allowed from two days prior to polling. Additionally, movement of motorcycles has been heavily regulated, with a complete ban on riding between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM, except in emergencies such as medical needs or family functions. During daytime hours from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, pillion riding has also been prohibited, with limited exemptions for essential activities like school transport or emergencies.
On polling day, some relaxation has been permitted. Family members will be allowed to ride together on motorcycles between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM strictly for voting purposes or essential needs. However, the Election Commission has clarified that any exemption from these restrictions will require prior written permission from the local police station, ensuring strict monitoring and control.
The directive also instructs district administrations to widely publicize these restrictions through print, electronic, and social media, and to coordinate closely with police authorities for enforcement. Officials have been warned to ensure zero violations, as the Commission seeks to maintain a calm and conducive atmosphere for voters and eliminate any possibility of intimidation or electoral malpractice.
