EC seeks clarification from Jairam Ramesh over Amit Shah's alleged intimidation

The Election Commission of India (EC) has requested detailed information from Congress leader Jairam Ramesh regarding his allegations that Union Home Minister Amit Shah made phone calls to 150 district magistrates just days before the vote counting. District magistrates and collectors serve as returning officers during elections. While no district magistrate has reported undue influence, the EC emphasized the need for specific details to address the issue in the “larger public interest” due to the seriousness of the allegations.

The EC's letter stated that the process of vote counting is a crucial duty, and public statements by a senior leader like Jairam Ramesh could cast doubt on the integrity of the process. Therefore, it is essential to address these claims.

On Saturday, Jairam Ramesh alleged that Amit Shah was engaging in "blatant and brazen" intimidation by calling up district magistrates and collectors. He asserted that the BJP's desperation was evident and predicted that the people's will would prevail, leading to the defeat of the BJP and victory for the INDIA Janbandhan on June 4th.
