SC seeks response from centre and states over misuse of Aadhaar as Citizenship Proof
Former Indian cricket captain and ex-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has approached law enforcement authorities after becoming the latest victim of cyber misinformation and defamation on social media. Ganguly filed a formal, signed complaint on Monday at the Thakurpukur police station in Kolkata, targetting an unofficial Facebook page that has been deliberately spreading fabricated narratives about him. The veteran sportsman has urged cyber cell sleuths and local police to initiate immediate legal action against the operators of the digital channel to protect his personal and professional dignity.
In his comprehensive written complaint, Ganguly highlighted that a Facebook page—which commands an audience of over 3.6 million followers—has been systematically running a negative smear campaign against him. The cricket legend asserted that the page is constantly trying to defame him and engineer a damaging, malicious perception within the public eye. He reminded the police authorities that having represented the country at the highest echelons of international sports, he commands millions of followers globally who look up to his legacy, making these online fabrications deeply harmful to his standing.
The legal flashpoint was reached after the page published a completely fabricated post claiming that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had conducted a sudden raid at Ganguly's private residence. While the highly controversial post was abruptly taken down and became invisible shortly after the former southpaw lodged his official police grievance, the damage to his public profile had already triggered deep concerns. Under his formal signature on the official charge sheet, Ganguly specifically noted his credential as the former national captain, signaling the gravity with which he views the cyber transgression.
