Roopa Ganguly arrested during protest of student's death in Bansdroni, gets bail
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at four locations in Kolkata on Thursday, targeting individuals connected to the alleged financial scam at RG Kar Medical College, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and killed in August. Among the locations raided were two flats belonging to Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
In addition to Ghosh’s properties, the ED searched the office of a medical supplier and the residence of a medical supplies vendor in the Laketown and Tala areas. These vendors were responsible for supplying medicines to the hospital, which is now under investigation for financial misconduct.
These fresh raids follow earlier ED searches across West Bengal, including Howrah, Sonarpur, and Hooghly locations. The central agency's investigation began after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed an FIR alleging financial irregularities and naming Ghosh as a key figure in the case.
The FIR accuses Ghosh and others of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The alleged financial mismanagement and corruption within the hospital have led to significant public outcry, particularly in light of the tragic death of the trainee doctor. The charges against Ghosh are serious and non-bailable, marking an escalation in the probe.
Ghosh, who served as the hospital’s principal from February 2021 until September 2023, was transferred in October but mysteriously resumed his post a month later, further raising suspicions.
