Another KMC councillor, Biswajit Mondal arrested, after woman alleges molestation and threats
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has recovered ₹2 crore in cash and gold from the residence of businessman Biswajit Poddar, alias 'Sona Pappu'. The marathon search operation, which began on Wednesday morning at his Fern Road residence in Ballygunge, initially yielded ₹1.20 crore, with an additional ₹80 lakh discovered later. Beyond the liquid assets, investigators also seized a luxury vehicle, incriminating property documents, and an illegal firearm from the premises.
Sona Pappu, a prominent figure in South Kolkata's Kasba and Ballygunge areas, is allegedly at the centre of an organised extortion and syndicate network. Multiple FIRs have been registered against him, citing charges of intimidation and forceful collection of funds from construction firms.
ED sources suggest that he acted as a middleman, collecting crores of rupees from builders and funnelling the illicit wealth to several 'influential' political figures within the state’s ruling administration.
