Egg prices touch Rs 8-9: Task Force raids Kolkata markets, warns traders

Kolkata families are feeling the pinch in their pockets—one egg now costs between Rs 8 and 9 in markets across the city. The sudden price surge in the peak season has left daily wage earners and middle-class homes worried, as a dozen eggs that used to cost under Rs 80 a month ago now crosses Rs 100 easily. Traders blames low supply from poultry farms and higher feed costs, but authorities suspect large-scale hoarding and black marketing are the real culprits behind the sky-rocketing rates.

To put an end to the profiteering, Bengal government’s Task Force swung into action today with surprise raids at major markets including the famous Maniktala bazaar. Officials stormed wholesale sections, checked stock registers and warned traders in strong words. Several shopkeepers were made to sign undertakings promising not to hide stock or inflate prices artificially.

The message was clear—nobody will be allowed to exploit people’s daily needs. Similar drives are now planned across Kolkata and nearby districts in the coming days. Officials say they will keep a daily watch on arrival and sale of eggs and take instant steps if prices don’t come down soon. For now, citizens are hoping the raids bring quick relief so their winter breakfast tables don’t stay empty of affordable eggs.
