Bappaditya Dasgupta, councillor of Ward No. 101 under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, faced protests from local residents after being brought out of a police station on Sunday morning following his arrest in an alleged extortion case. According to reports, a large crowd gathered outside the station as soon as he emerged, leading to demonstrations and slogan-shouting by protesters.
Witnesses said residents assembled in significant numbers and occupied the road near the police station during the protest. Demonstrators expressed their anger over the allegations against the councillor and raised slogans while police personnel remained present in the area. Reports also stated that eggs were thrown during the protest as tensions escalated outside the station premises.
Dasgupta was arrested late Saturday night in connection with allegations of extortion. According to police sources, the arrest followed the detention and questioning of his close associate and local political leader Sourav Ghosh earlier the same day. Investigators are continuing to examine complaints, documents and witness statements as part of the ongoing probe into the allegations against the councillor.
