Eknath Shinde on Kunal Kamra’s ‘gaddar’ joke:

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has reacted to comedian Kunal Kamra’s recent satirical act, calling it a deliberate attack rather than satire. Kamra had modified a song from Dil Toh Pagal Hai to mock Shinde’s political journey, seemingly referring to him as a ‘gaddar’ (traitor). In response, Shinde stated, "Freedom of speech is there. We understand satire. But there should be a limit. This is like taking 'supari' to speak against someone."

Following Kamra’s act, Shiv Sena workers vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai’s Khar area, where Kamra performed, and also damaged a hotel on the premises. Mumbai Police later registered an FIR against 19 Shiv Sena leaders and workers under multiple sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Police Act. Shinde, addressing the incident, remarked, "Other person should also maintain a certain level, otherwise action causes reaction," but added, "I do not justify vandalism."

Shinde also accused Kamra of consistently targeting political figures and institutions, stating, "This same person had commented on the Supreme Court of India, the Prime Minister, (journalist) Arnab Goswami, and some industrialists. This is not freedom of speech; this is working for someone." Kamra, however, defended his right to expression, asserting that free speech should not be limited to praising those in power. He also condemned the vandalism, stating that comedy venues should not be held responsible for a comedian’s words.

The controversy has reignited debates over freedom of expression and political satire, with leaders across party lines weighing in. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier criticized Kamra’s remarks, calling them "low-level comedy" and urging him to apologize. Kamra, however, maintained that he would not apologize and was prepared to cooperate with legal authorities for any lawful proceedings.

Amid the political row, Shinde shifted focus to governance, emphasizing infrastructure and welfare initiatives. "Nowadays, I don't reply to allegations. I say my work will be my reply," he stated, highlighting the revival of key projects such as Atal Setu, Coastal Road, and Metro expansions, along with schemes like free education for girls and the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ program. The matter continues to draw reactions, with political and legal implications unfolding.
