Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
In the politically sensitive region of Bhatpara in North 24 Parganas, rising election tensions have once again brought concerns of gun culture and gang-related violence into focus. The area, long associated with periodic clashes, has witnessed a fresh security alert following a major police action. Authorities say the timing of the recovery points to a possible attempt to destabilise the upcoming election environment.
In a significant breakthrough, police arrested Sujit Chowdhury, known locally as ‘Kalua’, from the Jagdal area. During the operation in Ward No. 35 under Bhatpara Municipality, officials recovered five lethal firearms along with a substantial cache of live ammunition. The seizure also included a vehicle, identified as a Thar, allegedly used for arms movement and asserting influence in the locality. Investigators suspect that the recovered weapons were being accumulated with the intent to trigger violence during elections, including targeting rivals and intimidating voters. The arsenal included a 9mm pistol, multiple 7mm pistols, and a pipe gun, indicating a level of preparation that raised serious concern among enforcement agencies. Officials believe the arrest may have disrupted a coordinated plan for large-scale unrest.
Police data from the region highlights an ongoing pattern of illegal arms recovery and arrests in recent months. Authorities report dozens of firearms and several rounds of ammunition seized, along with multiple detentions linked to criminal activities. The latest action is being viewed as part of a broader crackdown aimed at curbing organised networks that have kept the region on edge during election cycles.
