Full state honors for Ratan Tata, one day mourning announced in Maharashtra
A European Union official told Twitter CEO Elon Musk that the microblogging site must comply with laws on hate speech and disinformation, according to a report. An EU official told Elon Musk that Twitter must make progress in curbing hate speech and other harmful content on the platform. European Commissioner Thierry Breton and Elon Musk held a video call to assess Twitter's readiness for new European rules, known as the Digital Services Act, due to come into effect later this year.
Breton, who oversees the EU's digital policy, told Elon Musk he was "vigilant" about the resources and tools Twitter is devoting to tackling trust and security issues across the 27-nation bloc, including all its languages. “We need to see progress towards full compliance with the Digital Services Act. My team will closely follow the work by Twitter and by all other online platforms," he said.
Musk said in a tweet, "Good meeting with Thierry Breton regarding EU DSA. The goals of transparency, accountability and accuracy of information are aligned with ours. Community Notes will be transformational for the latter."
The Digital Services Act is part of an overhaul of the EU's digital rules aimed at reining in the power of online platforms and social media companies and removing toxic content. Violations could lead to fines of up to six percent of the company's annual global revenue - in the billions - or even an EU ban.
