Ex-BJP MP in Jharkhand demands Sarna Code before discussion on UCC

Former BJP MP and Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan (ASA) chief Salkhan Murmu today wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu demanding a Sarna religious code in the census form before any discussion on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Currently, Murmu in his letter said that his organization neither supports nor opposes the UCC as no clear proposal has come out, but he has clearly stated that his organization will stand behind the Constitution of India.

ASA operates in 400 tribal blocks of seven states including Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh and fights for the social, religious, economic and political empowerment of the tribe under a constitutional and democratic set-up. India.

“According to Article 25 of the Constitution of India, when all others were given religious status, why were we not given Sarna Dharma? It is like a chain of religious slavery on us because we are not Hindus, Muslims and Christians. We have no knowledge about Varna…. As of 2011 census, nature worshiping tribes are about 50 lakhs and tribes of Jain religion are registered about 44 lakhs.

So are we still being treated unfairly? We are not Hindus. Not even legally a Hindu….But the way Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists etc walk in harmony with Hindus, so with the wisdom of Sarna we too can consider walking in harmony with Hindus. We see the danger to our progress, identity, belonging to a foreign religion and a foreign language culture. We are cut off from our roots…” the letter reads.
