Jayanta Pal, the removed IC of Chanditala Police Station, allegedly shot himself with an illegal country-made pistol inside a car in Howrah’s Ghoshpara following a heated argument with his girlfriend. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, initially appeared to be an attack, as Pal claimed someone else had fired at him. However, eyewitness statements, including that of his girlfriend Tina Dam, revealed that he shot himself using his other hand during the argument. Shibpur Police later recovered the firearm from a vat located 500 meters away from the scene.
During the investigation, authorities recovered condoms and sex toys from the car, further intensifying scrutiny on Pal. A departmental inquiry has been initiated, with a fact-finding team led by Hooghly Additional SP Krishnu Roy visiting Chanditala Police Station to gather more details. Officials have confirmed that if found guilty, Pal could face strict disciplinary action. Meanwhile, forensic experts are examining the recovered weapon, and statements from all witnesses, including Dam, are being recorded.
Police are also investigating how the illegal firearm came into Pal’s possession and whether it had any links to criminal activity. Questions are being raised about potential misconduct and security lapses, as officers are typically only allowed to carry service revolvers. Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage from the area and verifying call records to establish the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
