Former Trinamool Congress MP Shantanu Sen has filed a case in the Calcutta High Court after the West Bengal Medical Council cancelled his registration for allegedly using an honorary foreign degree without informing the council. The council had served him a notice last month and summoned him on Thursday. After the hearing, his medical registration was cancelled for two years on grounds of professional misconduct.
According to the council, Sen was allegedly using the honorary FRCP (Glasgow) title, which he received from the Royal College of Physicians, without informing the state medical council. The council stated that such honorary titles cannot be used as academic or professional qualifications unless officially recognised. The use of this title without approval was considered a violation of the medical code.
Sen responded to the development by saying, "If I had completed an FRCP degree directly after MBBS without any education or qualification in radiology, and practised as a specialist, that would have been wrong." He has challenged the decision in court, and the Calcutta High Court allowed him to file the case on Friday. The matter is expected to come up for hearing before the bench of Justice Amrita Sinha on Monday.
