Expanding Jadavpur University death probe: new arrests made amidst allegations of intense Ragging and Harassment

Kolkata Police have arrested Deepshekhar Dutta and Manotosh Ghosh, both second-year students, in connection with the alleged ragging and subsequent death of an 18-year-old undergraduate student at Jadavpur University. This follows the earlier arrest of an ex-student, Sourabh Chowdhury, who was remanded in police custody until August 22. Preliminary investigation suggests intense ragging, with a sexual harassment angle also being probed.

Allegations of Ragging and Harassment Investigated

The tragic death of Swapnadeep Kundu, a first-year undergraduate student, has prompted a wider investigation into alleged ragging and harassment practices within the university. Social media posts have emerged indicating that students are often subjected to lewd remarks and forced into demeaning acts during ragging. Police are examining all angles to determine the circumstances leading to Swapnadeep's fatal fall from the hostel balcony.

Family Claims Ragging Involved

Swapnadeep Kundu's family alleges that he was subjected to ragging by hostel boarders, pointing to injury marks found on his body. His father, Ramprasad Kundu, filed a police complaint holding some of the hostel inmates responsible for his son's death. A classmate's Facebook post has also highlighted the involvement of "some seniors" in the ragging incident, further intensifying the investigation.

Swapnadeep Kundu, a first-year undergraduate student of Bengali (Honours), fell from the balcony of the main hostel building in the university around 11:45 pm on August 9. He was taken to a hospital, where he died at 4:30 am on Thursday.

"Swapnadeep spoke to his mother on Wednesday evening and told her he was not feeling good and was scared. His mother asked him what had happened and he said, 'You please come fast. I have lots of things to tell you.' When she called him back, the calls went unanswered. About an hour later, his parents got a call asking them to come to Kolkata as their son had suffered a fall," the teen's uncle, Arup Kundu, said.
