A powerful explosion occurred at the ordnance factory in Jawahar Nagar, Bhandara, Maharashtra, on January 24, around 10:30 AM, killing at least eight workers and injuring seven others. The blast took place in the LTP (Large Tank Production) section of the factory, causing the roof to collapse and trapping numerous workers under debris. The intensity of the explosion was so strong that it was heard up to 5 kilometers away, with thick plumes of smoke rising from the site.
District Collector Sanjay Kolte confirmed that a rescue operation was immediately launched, with firefighting, medical, and police teams rushing to the scene. Initial efforts led to the rescue of three workers, while one worker was found dead under the rubble. Rescue operations continued throughout the day, with JCB machines being used to remove debris and search for survivors. Kolte stated that 12 workers were in the affected area at the time of the blast, and additional teams were being mobilized to assist in the rescue.
As of the latest updates, seven people have been rescued, while more workers are believed to still be trapped under the rubble. Medical teams, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), were deployed to provide immediate assistance to the survivors and to transport the injured to hospitals. Efforts to remove the collapsed roof and debris continued into the afternoon, with authorities working tirelessly to locate all trapped workers.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, though it is believed to have originated in the RDX manufacturing section of the factory, where explosive materials are produced. Factory officials, in coordination with local authorities, are working to assess the situation and determine the exact cause. The factory's senior management is also collaborating with the defense forces, who are assisting in the ongoing operations.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis extended condolences to the families of the victims, stating that the district administration and rescue teams were providing full support to the affected families.
