"Kolkata to get Water Metro connectivity," says Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari
A devastating incident occurred at the Parashia Colliery in the Kunustoria area of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) in Asansol Sadar division on Wednesday during the early morning shift. While workers were engaged in coal cutting in Section 27, a violent air blast suddenly occurred, sending shockwaves through the underground tunnels. The force of the blast was so intense that over 40 miners, including several contract laborers, were thrown against the walls and machinery, resulting in widespread injuries.
Initial reports suggest that one worker has tragically lost his life in the accident, although the mine management has yet to provide official confirmation regarding the fatality. The high air pressure generated by the blast caused immediate panic and chaos hundreds of feet below the surface. Rescue teams and senior ECL officials rushed to the spot shortly after the alarm was raised to evacuate the trapped and injured personnel from the smoke-filled section.
The injured miners were pulled out of the pits and immediately rushed to various medical facilities, including the Basra Area Hospital in Raniganj and other ECL-run hospitals. Medical sources indicate that several of the workers remain in critical condition, battling severe trauma and respiratory issues. The management has initiated an internal probe to determine if safety protocols were bypassed or if the blast was a result of unpredictable geological pressure.
