A case of impersonation and extortion attempt has come to light at the Eastern Railway office. On 9th June 2023, an email was received from the office of the General Manager, Eastern Railway, alerting them about an email received from a person named Biswanath Sarkar.
The email claimed to be from "2nd Personal Secretary to Abhishek Banerjee, Hon'ble Member of Parliament," demanding the immediate release of Rs 5,87,82,203 as a tender amount.
Subsequently, the same person, identified as Bivash Sarkar, made threatening phone calls to the officials from his mobile phone, demanding extortion money and resorting to deceitful tactics. An investigation was launched, leading to the registration of a case at Hare Street Police Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
During the investigation, Bivash Sarkar, aged 52 and a resident of Kolkata, was arrested on 9th June 2023. His mobile phone, considered crucial evidence, was seized. Confessing to his guilt, he was produced before the Ld.CMM (Chief Metropolitan Magistrate), Calcutta, and remanded in police custody until 19th June 2023.
In another significant development, an additional suspect, identified as Biswanath Sarkar, aged 49 and a resident of Santaldih Thermal Power Station Township, Purulia, was apprehended on 10th June 2023 from his residence. The investigation into the case is ongoing, as authorities work towards unraveling the full extent of the impersonation and extortion attempt at the Eastern Railway office.
