Tension escalated sharply in Falta on Saturday as villagers staged protests demanding a repoll amid allegations of intimidation and electoral irregularities. In a significant development, the Election Commission of India has reportedly ordered the immediate arrest of two individuals said to be close aides of Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan, while also seeking a detailed report on the situation.
According to sources, the Commission directed that Izrafil Chakdar and Sujauddin Sheikh be arrested within Saturday itself. The directive comes amid mounting complaints from residents who have accused local elements of issuing threats over voting choices. At the same time, the Commission has asked for a comprehensive account of the alleged incidents, including reports of violence and assault.
Despite repolling being conducted in several booths across Diamond Harbour and Magrahat West, Falta has not been included in the repoll list so far, even as allegations continue to surface. Till 3 pm, overall turnout in the repoll areas stood at 72.43 per cent, with 72.50 per cent in Magrahat West and 72.36 per cent in Diamond Harbour. However, sources indicate that the Commission may still consider ordering a fresh election across the entire Falta constituency.
The situation intensified in the Hasimnagar area, where protesters alleged that villagers were being threatened at their homes for supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party, with accusations pointing towards individuals linked to Izrafil Chakdar. Ajaypal Sharma rushed to the spot along with police from Falta Police Station and central forces to restore order. Villagers demonstrated in front of officials, accusing police of inaction despite complaints and demanding immediate arrests, as authorities continue to assess the situation and investigate the allegations.
