Falta's 'Pushpa' Jahangir Khan bows out of election two days before polling

In a stunning political twist, Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominee Jahangir Khan on Tuesday officially withdrew his candidacy for the high-stakes Falta Assembly repoll. The unexpected withdrawal comes as a severe blow to the party leadership under Mamata Banerjee. Initially, the electoral roster featured a fierce quadrilateral contest with Jahangir Khan slated to go head-to-head against Debangshu Panda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Abdur Razzak Molla of the Congress, and Sambhu Nath Kurmi of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

The sudden structural change comes right on the heels of an unprecedented intervention by the Election Commission of India (ECI), which cancelled the initial voting logs and ordered a complete "fresh" repoll across all 285 booths of the constituency. The regulatory mandate scheduled the fresh democratic exercise for May 21, 2026, with the official counting relocated to May 24, separating it from the rest of the state's counting timeline.

The sudden surrender of the seat holds massive tactical significance as Falta falls squarely within the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha domain—a prestigious political bastion heavily managed by TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
