A tragic road accident in Murshidabad claimed the lives of a family of three as they were returning home from a Durga Puja celebration. The victims, Archana Halder (34), her husband Bikram Halder (37), and their daughter Ananya (13), were walking along the national highway near Rezinagar bus stand at around 11:30 PM on Navami when a bus traveling from Kolkata to Siliguri struck them from behind.
Witnesses reported that the accident occurred amidst the festive noise, which may have masked the sound of the approaching vehicle. The bus driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, prompting local residents to rush to the family’s aid. They quickly transported the victims to Beldanga Primary Health Center for emergency treatment.
Upon arrival at the health center, Archana was declared dead. Although Bikram and Ananya were initially alive, their conditions rapidly deteriorated. They were subsequently transferred to Murshidabad Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care, but both succumbed to their injuries shortly after.
The police later located the bus involved in the accident in Baharampur and arrested the driver, whose identity has not yet been disclosed. Local authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the accident and whether any additional charges will be filed against the driver.
This tragic incident has deeply affected the community, which is now mourning the loss of the Halder family during what should have been a festive occasion. Local leaders have expressed their condolences and are calling for heightened awareness about road safety, especially during busy festive seasons when pedestrian traffic increases. In a related series of unfortunate events, two other youths were killed, and another was seriously injured in separate road accidents in Polba, Hooghly, on the same night.
