A case of sexual harassment has been registered against CPI(M) leader and advocate Firdous Shamim following a complaint by a junior woman lawyer in Kolkata. Police confirmed on Friday that the case has been lodged at Hare Street Police Station in central Kolkata and that an investigation is currently underway.
According to police sources, the complainant submitted a written complaint on Wednesday alleging that Shamim made obscene remarks, engaged in inappropriate physical behaviour, and sexually harassed her. She also accused him of intimidation and wrongful restraint.
Based on the allegations, police have registered a case under Sections 74, 75, 79, 351(2), and 126(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These provisions include charges related to outraging modesty, sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, and wrongful confinement. Several of the sections invoked are reported to be non-bailable.
Indira Mukhopadhyay, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division), Kolkata Police, confirmed that a complaint had been received from a woman advocate alleging sexually explicit comments and attempts at intimidation. She stated that the matter is being investigated in accordance with the law.
