A major accident was narrowly averted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after a portion of the ceiling in the girls’ hostel collapsed late Sunday night, raising fresh concerns over infrastructure safety. A female medical student had a close escape when debris fell moments after she exited the hostel toilet, highlighting the deteriorating condition of the premises.
The incident occurred around 10:20 PM when the student had gone to use the toilet. According to eyewitnesses, within seconds of her stepping out, a large chunk of the ceiling came crashing down with a loud noise, shaking the entire floor. The debris narrowly missed her, potentially saving her from serious injury or a fatal outcome.
Reports indicate that the damage is not limited to a single area. Several rooms in the old girls’ hostel, particularly rooms numbered 210 and 214 on the second floor, are said to be in a dangerous condition, with plaster frequently falling off. Similar concerns have also been raised about the boys’ hostel, where incidents of ceiling debris falling have reportedly occurred.
The latest incident adds to a series of alarming events at the institution. Earlier this month, a lift malfunction led to the death of a man due to severe internal injuries, while another patient reportedly died after being forced to climb floors due to poor sanitation facilities. These repeated occurrences have intensified scrutiny over the hospital’s infrastructure and administrative accountability.
