Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
A heated dispute over property and family issues ended in tragedy on the eve of the New Year in Central Kolkata. Niraj Jaiswal (55), a resident of Kailash Bose Street, lost his life after being allegedly assaulted by his younger brother, Dhiraj Jaiswal (53), during a confrontation in front of the latter’s residence on A.J.C. Bose Road. According to the police, the incident occurred between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM on Tuesday when an altercation between the siblings turned physical.
The victim’s son, Subham Jaiswal, reported the matter to the Park Street Police Station early Wednesday morning. He stated that during the scuffle, his uncle Dhiraj assaulted his father with "fist and blows," causing him to fall and strike his head against a brick. Niraj Jaiswal was rushed to the NRS Medical College and Hospital in a critical state. Despite medical efforts, he was declared dead by the attending doctors at approximately 12:40 AM on December 31.
Following the formal complaint, the Park Street Police intercepted and interrogated the accused, Dhiraj Jaiswal, at his residence. Officials confirmed that the accused has confessed to the crime and has been placed under arrest. The case has been registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder—a charge carrying a potential sentence of life imprisonment or up to ten years in jail.
The police have secured the spot for a forensic examination by the scientific wing and the FSL Belgachia team. An inquest and post-mortem examination were scheduled at the NRS morgue on Wednesday to determine the exact cause of death.
