Renowned Indian film director and screenwriter Shyam Benegal, known for his significant contributions to Indian cinema, passed away on Monday evening at the age of 90. The veteran filmmaker breathed his last at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai, where he was undergoing treatment for chronic kidney disease.
Benegal, who was visiting the hospital for dialysis thrice a week, was admitted to the intensive care unit days after celebrating his 90th birthday on December 14. Despite his health struggles, his passion for cinema remained unwavering until the end.
Known as one of the pioneers of parallel cinema in India, Benegal's legacy is often compared to that of legendary filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak. His critically acclaimed films, including Ankur, Nishant, Manthan, Bhumika, Junoon, and Mandi, have left an indelible mark on Indian cinema.
His daughter, Pia Benegal, confirmed the news, stating, “He passed away at 6:38 pm at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central. He had been suffering from chronic kidney disease for several years, but it had worsened recently.”
Benegal's passing marks the end of an era for Indian cinema, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers.
