A massive fire broke out early Sunday morning in Mangala Hat, adjacent to Howrah Police Station, triggering panic among traders and residents. The fire originated on the third floor of Modern Hat, a multi-storey commercial building that houses over 200 small shops and godowns.
According to eyewitnesses, smoke was first noticed coming from a shop, prompting local traders to immediately inform the Howrah Police Station. In response, five fire engines were rushed to the spot. The flames quickly spread due to the dense cluster of shops and stored materials, creating a volatile situation.
Panic gripped the area as thick smoke engulfed the surroundings. Local residents were seen helping evacuate people and remove goods from nearby shops. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported during the incident.
After battling the blaze for nearly an hour and a half, fire personnel managed to bring the fire under control. Fire department officials suspect a short circuit may have triggered the incident, but a detailed investigation is now underway to confirm the cause.
Fire safety protocols in the commercial complex are also expected to be reviewed, as many shopkeepers claimed the building lacked proper preventive measures. Meanwhile, damage assessment teams are working to determine the extent of losses suffered by the affected traders.
Officials from the fire brigade have said they will inspect the site thoroughly to understand the ignition point and assess whether negligence played a role in the fire outbreak.
