College security guard held over Kolkata student's alleged gang-rape case; 4th arrest so far
A fire broke out at a trolley bag shop located on the fourth floor of an old building at 163/1, M.G. Road, Chitpur Crossing, around 7:50 PM. The building, which primarily serves as a storage godown, also houses some residents. Within minutes, the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the entire godown and reducing it to ashes.
As soon as the fire was reported, fire department officials rushed to the scene to begin firefighting operations. Three fire engines were deployed to contain the flames. However, due to the building's age and structure, accessing the fire proved challenging. Despite these obstacles, the fire brigade’s quick response prevented the flames from spreading further.
While the fire is now largely under control, some small pockets of fire remain active. Firefighters continue their operations cautiously, as the godown remains extremely heated, and smoke is still billowing from the structure. Authorities are also using cooling techniques to prevent re-ignition.
Local police officials arrived at the scene soon after the incident to assist with crowd control and ensure safety. Due to the fire and subsequent firefighting efforts, traffic congestion was reported in the Chitpur Crossing area. However, police officers managed to bring the situation under control, and normalcy has been restored.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Preliminary reports suggest that electrical issues or an overheated storage area could have triggered the blaze. Fire department officials will conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact reason. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far. However, residents and local shop owners have expressed concerns over the safety of old buildings in the area.
